How to Plan Outfits for Spring Family Portraits

Spring is in the air! I love this time of year because so many of my incredible clients schedule their family portraits. With flowers blooming and longer days, Spring is a great time for your session. Once your schedule is on the calendar, it’s time to start planning all of the details – like what to wear and where to have your portraits. So today, let’s talk about how to plan outfits for your spring family portraits!

Tip #1: There’s no such thing as “too dressy” for your portraits!

This is a special time to make memories and celebrate your beautiful family, so dress it up! Pull out your favorite outfits for each of the family members attending, or consider renting something special. I’m all about beautiful dresses for the ladies and nice shirts and slacks for the guys. These are your photos, so dress how you want – and seriously, it’s impossible to be too dressed up!

Tip #2: Everyone doesn’t have to match!

Instead of having everyone wear the same color, I recommend picking a couple different colors that compliment each other so that you can coordinate rather than match. My best recommendation is to have you start with one outfit – usually mom’s – and then choose the rest around that one. Pull from the colors or patterns on the dress. A variety of colors will bring some character to your images.

Tip #3: Be sure to pick lighter colors and pastels if you love your photos to be light and airy!

One thing that’s often overlooked is the fact that the color of your outfits will impact how your final images look. If you love the more light and airy portraits, then you’ll want to use lighter colors in your outfits. PS… The same goes for choosing locations. We’d want to look for lighter, open spaces or lighter walls for your backdrop.

As you plan your Spring portraits, I’m always here to help answer any questions you may have! I want you to love your portraits. That’s why I created my client guide to help you plan as well. Everyone who books will get a copy of it to help them create images they’ll love for years to come. Happy Spring!
