When I was trying to decide what to share on the blog this month, I began digging through my archives to look for some favorite sessions I just hadn’t gotten around to posting yet. The W. family’s lifestyle newborn portraits jumped out at me right away. I loved photographing the newest addition to the family in a relaxed portrait session at home. As I scrolled through their portraits, I realized it would be a great time to share some tips for a successful newborn lifestyle session with you!
What is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?
Lifestyle portraits are taken at home, in your house. They often take place in the spaces with the best light for photos including the nursery, master bedroom, or living room. This is a great option for families who have siblings or want their fur babies involved too! Lifestyle sessions are often way less stressful for the entire family, too, because it’s the environment everyone is most familiar with. Getting a clean outfit, new diaper, or taking a snack break is way easier when you don’t have to pack up a thousand bags. Not to mention, it’s nice to not have to travel with a young baby during their first days of life!
When should you book a newborn session?
The best time for newborn portraits is between 5 and 14 days old, because your baby is still sleeping a lot and curls up easily. Of course, if you want posed newborn portraits, that’s even more important. For a lifestyle session, we can stretch that time frame out a little bit if it’s better for your schedule. The time of the session will depend on the light – but typically the morning is best!
Preparing for Your Newborn Portraits
Since you just had a baby, there’s not too much I need you to prepare ahead of time. But a few things to consider are the rooms you’re hoping to have portraits taken in. Take a quick look around and see if anything major needs to be picked up or moved. We’ll probably move things around a bit to maximize space and light, so don’t be surprised if that happens! I encourage you to have baby fed not long before I arrive so they’re sleepy, too! But, if they’re awake or need a break while I’m there, that’s totally fine too!
If you’re expecting this year, reach out to me before the baby arrives for your session! Once we know when your due date is, I’ll mark the calendar. After the baby arrives, we’ll set an exact day and time. I know babies come on their own time so I’m flexible! Enjoy this peek into the W family’s newborn session so you can see just what a lifestyle newborn session can be like!!
